About the Book(s)

I have a passion for exploring national and state parks, each with its own unique features, such as special trails, flowers, and animals. However, I found that most outdoor location-based children's books lacked this uniqueness, especially for 1-4 year olds.

The Full Story

In 2020, during the pandemic, I needed a creative outlet and decided to write a book for my kids based in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I explored the concept of simple rhyming text, beautiful illustrations of my favorite locations in the park, and interactivity to keep their attention. The result was "Have You Seen a Black Bear?" - a search-and-find book that takes the child through Elkmont, Cades Cove, Ramsey’s Cascades, The Sinks, Clingmans Dome, and more, looking for a hidden black bear. The short text was designed to be a quick read for sleepy parents in a camper or an interactive search for all the wildlife that is infused in the illustrations.

I dedicated this book to my grandfather who passed away from Parkinson’s. During his last hike in 2012, we saw a Cardinal on Gregory’s Bald - a sweet but labor-intensive hike for a man with Parkinson’s. Seeing a Cardinal represents the notion that a loved one is watching over you in that moment.

Ultimately, my dream is for these books to be a tool to raise money for the parks they are written about. The price point on the ISBN is $12.99, and discount pricing for retailers is highly competitive in order to share the joy of finding the black bear."
